One of the more subversive anti-war songs in the alt-pop canon, Primus's 1990 alt-metal chug-a-thon "Too Many Puppies" is a creative political tract cautioning about the dangers of war. "Too many puppies are being shot in the dark / Too many puppies are trained not to bark," they begin. "At the sight of blood that must be spilled so that we may / maintain our oil fields." The band don't hold back with their messaging, appearing to take aim at the US military-industrial complex while calling out 'the dogs of war' for exploiting vulnerable soldiers ("puppies") for their own interests. The first Primus song penned by Les Claypool, "Too Many Puppies" was featured on the band's debut studio album Frizzle Fry, which was released in 1990 by Caroline Records and produced by the band and Matt Winegar. Frizzle Fry is notable for yielding one of the band's fan favourites and debut single, "John the Fisherman."
