Considered by many as a modern-day bluegrass classic, the somber "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" was originally written by American singer-songwriter Darrell Scott in 1997. The musician got the inspiration for the song from a tombstone in Harlan Country, Kentucky, a place he had visited while researching his own family history. "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" is a masterful piece of storytelling, describing the struggles of coal town residents across several generations. The song first appeared on Darrell Scott's 1997 studio debut Aloha from Nashville and gained new popularity a few years later after being recorded by country artist Patty Loveless in 2001. The singer reportedly had a hard time recording the song, but ultimately succeeded after husband and producer Emery Gordy Jr. suggested she use her deceased father (also a coal miner) as inspiration. Patty Loveless's version proved incredibly successful, earning a nomination for Song of the Year at the 2002 International Bluegrass Music Awards. In 2022, she performed "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" as a live duet with Chris Stapleton at the Annual Country Music Awards ceremony, which led to the song entering the US Country Digital Song Sales chart at Number 16.
