Following his dismissal from Black Sabbath in 1979 due to his worsening substance abuse issues, English singer Ozzy Osbourne rose from the ashes with two LPs that would leave a long-lasting impression on the world of heavy metal for years to come: Blizzard of Ozz (1980) and Diary of a Madman (1981). Besides Ozzy Osbourne's eccentric personality (both on and off the stage), these now-classic metal albums were mainly driven by the instrumental dexterity of his backing band, which consisted of guitar virtuoso Randy Rhoads, drummer Lee Kerslake, and bass player and lyricist Bob Daisley. One fine example of this undeniable musical chemistry was the single "You Can't Kill Rock and Roll," the third track on Diary of a Madman. Written by Ozzy Osbourne, Bob Daisley, and Randy Rhoads, "You Can't Kill Rock and Roll" is a 7-minute epic about the singer's poor relationship with critics and journalists, backed by both soft acoustic passages and loud bursts of distortion.
