(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay is an Otis Redding song recorded just three days before he died in a plane crash. It was released posthumously and became his only #1 song. The song was co-written by Redding and guitarist/producer Steve Cropper. When they got together to write, Redding had just played some shows in San Francisco. He'd stayed at a boathouse and had the line "I watch the ships come in and I watch them roll away again." Redding had been listening to The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album and was eager to be more creative in the studio. "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay" contains one of pop music's most famous whistles, and it's the artist. He also started joking around in the studio, making "caw, caw” seagull sounds which prompted Cropper to add some sounds of the seashore from a sound effect record. The backing track for "(Sittin' on)The Dock of the Bay is available as an instrumental. Be sure to check out the other arrangements of this soul classic on Karaoke Version.
