It is widely known among songwriting circles that certain songs take longer than others. In the case of the rootsy Americana anthem "Wagon Wheel," it took a whopping 25 years for it to be finished. Included in Old Crow Medicine Show's 2004 eponymous studio debut, the song's origin dates back to the recording sessions of Bob Dylan's 1973 album Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, which contained a rough outtake titled "Rock Me, Mama." Featuring solely foot-stomping, a catchy chorus, and a mumbled verse, the demo made its way to several bootlegs over the years, one of which eventually got to the hands of OCMS founding member Critter Fuqua during a family trip to London. Upon his return to the United States, Fuqua presented the song to bandmate Ketch Secor, who would later add a few verses while feeling homesick at college. Released as the lead single from their chart-topping first studio effort, "Wagon Wheel" tells the story of a man hitchhiking south to meet his lover. Since its release in 2004, the Platinum-selling single became the band's signature song. Following the track's overwhelming reception, Bob Dylan gave OCMS another incomplete sketch that the band turned into the hit single "Sweet Amarillo" in 2014.
