Although it was popularized by Nirvana on their 1994 live album MTV Unplugged in New York, the story of the proto-freak folk anthem "Plateau" dates back to 1984 when the Phoenix alternative rock band Meat Puppets included it in their seminal sophomore effort Meat Puppets II. Written by lead singer and guitarist Curt Kirkwood, the inspiration behind "Plateau" stems from the realization that one can't change things on a larger scale and therefore needs to make peace with his own existence. It has been described by its author as both a coming-of-age song and one of the most truthful songs he's ever written. After befriending the members of Nirvana while on tour, the Meat Puppets were invited to play at the band's 1993 MTV Unplugged concert at Sony Music Studios in New York City. During the performance, they provided backing instrumentation for three of their songs: "Oh, Me", "Lake of Fire", and "Plateau."
