With a title like "Dead Souls", and a band like Nine Inch Nails, you know what's on the cards. This angst-ridden take on the Joy Divison B-side – originally recorded in 1979 and featured on the post-punk band's compilation album Still – appeared in cult 1994 goth superhero film The Crow, which was directed by Alex Proyas, written by David J. Schow and John Shirley and marked by tragedy when its star, Brandon Lee, was killed in an on-set accident just days before the filming was due to end. It was also included on its soundtrack. Nine Inch Nails also added their definitive cover of "Dead Souls" as the tenth track on the Japanese version of their classic album The Downward Spiral, released that same year. Ten years later, the track was featured again on the 10th-anniversary deluxe edition of The Downward Spiral. Written by Joy Division's Ian Curtis, "Dead Souls" is believed to be a meditation on his well-documented struggles with mental health.
