Christian rock band MercyMe knew they had something special in "I Can Only Imagine", a song they originally wrote and recorded for their fifth self-released album, 1999’s The Worship Project. As their success grew, the challenges of running an independent operation without the aid of a major label led to pursuing a deal with Contemporary Christian music label INO Records. When it was time to select songs from their previous releases to include as part of their major-label debut Almost There, "I Can Only Imagine" was a no-brainer. The song is an emotional meditation on what it could be like to find one’s loved ones in the afterlife, inspired by the death of lead singer Bart Millard’s father. The song was a tremendous success, becoming the most-played song in the history of Christian radio and the best-selling Christian song of all time. The story behind the song inspired a film by the same name released in 2018 starring J. Michael Finley as Millard.
