Following the incredible success of Meat Loaf's studio debut, the operatic pop masterpiece Bat Out of Hell (1977), American composer Jim Steinman started working on the singer's follow-up album in 1978. However, a combination of relentless touring and substance abuse had taken a toll on Meat Loaf's voice, leaving him out of the recording process. It wasn't until 1981, after the singer decided to quit drugs, that the recording sessions for his sophomore effort began. Dead Ringer, the resulting album, appeared in September of that year and yielded the single "Dead Ringer for Love," a rollicking rock'n'roll tune that featured guest vocals by singer and actress Cher. Originally written by Jim Steinman for the TV comedy series Delta House, the song's melody was later reworked into the album's version, which was released in the UK in November 1981. "Dead Ringer for Love" peaked at Number 5 in the United Kingdom and was later included in the compilation Hits Out of Hell (1984) and on some Bat Out of Hell re-releases.
