Maze, also known as Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly and Frankie Beverly & Maze, was founded by Frankie Beverly in Philadelphia in 1970 first under the name Raw Soul. After upping sticks from Philadelphia to the San Francisco Bay Area in California in 1971, they spent the early 1970s honing their sound and released a clutch of singles in the years that followed, but it wasn't until 1976 that their star began to ascend, thanks to a fortuitous meeting with Marvin Gaye—who took them on the road with him. After carving a path for themselves as a sprawling funk-forward troupe in the 1980s, in 1989, they signed with Warner Bros. and released the hit album Silky Soul. Back to Basics was the 1993 follow-up on which "The Morning After" was contained. The song, which made it to number 19 on the US R&B chart and also charted on the Billboard Hot 100, is considered a classic of the quiet storm genre, and comprises an era-defining soundscape of lush synths and buttery smooth harmonies.
