Born in London in 1930, and later dubbed "the man with the golden voice," Matt Monro was one of the biggest popular recording artists of the 1960s while much of his output was notably steered by producer and "Fifth Beatle" George Martin. Equipped with a smooth and elegant baritone, he notched up a string of UK Top 10 hits during the early-mid 1960s, including "Portrait of My Love" (1960), "My Kind of Girl" (1961), "Softly As I Leave You" (1961) and "Walk Away" (1964), but, most significantly, the James Bond theme: "From Russia with Love." His rendition of "Unchained Melody"— written by Alex North and Hy Zaret and first sung by Todd Duncan for the 1955 prison movie Unchained—appeared at the height of his fame in 1964, and was featured on his LP From Hollywood with Love. Elsewhere, Matt Monro's success in the world of film soundtracks extended to "Born Free" for the 1966 film of the same name and "On Days Like These" for 1969 heist classic The Italian Job.
