The song “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” is a beautiful tribute to Ireland and its people. Although the song was first published in 1912 it remains a popular standard to this day. The song was written by Chauncey Olcott, George Graff, Jr, and Ernest Ball for the theatrical show titled The Isle O’Dreams. At the time, songs that romanticized Ireland were very popular. Songwriter Olcott (July 21, 1858- March 18, 1932) was born in Buffalo, NY but his mother was from County Cork, Ireland. He became a Broadway star, often singing sentimental arias with Irish themes and playing Irish roles. Besides The Isle O’ Dreams, he composed musical scores for over twenty other Irish musicals including Old Limerick Town, Barry of Ballymore, and The Irish Artist. Some of you will likely know another one of his compositions “My Wild Irish Rose.”  Many famous artists have recorded “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” including Bing Crosby, and Connie Francis. This version is arranged as recorded by Mary Duff. She was born in Meath, Ireland and has traveled around the world performing country, pop, folk, and traditional Irish music.
