"Dancing in the Street" is a protest anthem of the most celebratory and joyous kind, a jubilant song that beams from the rooftops and invokes you to get off your feet and feel something. Originally written by Marvin Gaye, William "Mickey" Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter, the track – which was inspired by the idea of 'dancing' through shoots of water during the hot Detroit summers – was first brought into the collective consciousness in 1964 when Detroit vocal group Martha Reeves & The Vandellas recorded their version, which went to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, also peaking at number four in the UK Singles Chart and giving the group their signature hit.
