Schlager literally translates as "hits" so it's no wonder the genre is noted for churning out a hefty wad of popular songs in countries like Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the Nordic countries. This good-time, knees-up folk brand is a repeat offender on the Eurovision Song Contest circuit and had been around since the beginning of the contest back in 1956, with plenty of artists bringing it to the stage. Hailing from the Netherlands, Marco Schuitmaker has been revitalising the decades-old genre with his youthful joie de vivre since 2017 when he released his first single "Niemand kust als jij uit" (Nobody kisses like you). He scored his breakthrough hit with "Engelbewaarder" (My Guardian Angel) five years later, a cover of the 1976 single by Flemish singer Mieke. Marco Schuitmaker took the song to new heights in 2023 and struck gold in the Netherlands, also later going platinum with the song.
