Ronciglione-born singer-songwriter Marco Mengoni gained national prominence in 2009 after winning the third season of Italian X Factor and swiftly set about laying the groundwork for his professional career. His debut EP Dove si vola arrived that same year, and, following his win at the 63rd Sanremo Music Festival with "L'essenziale," he was chosen to represent his country in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö. He failed to claim the Eurovision crown that year but gave it another whirl ten years later after winning the 73rd Sanremo Music Festival with "Due vite"; a towering, impassioned Italian-language pop ballad written by Marco Mengoni with Davide Petrella and Davide Simonetta. This was the song Marco Mengoni sang to represent his country again at the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool, and his hard work paid off: he finished fourth in the final with an impressive 350 points.
