"Things Goin' On" is essentially a protest song from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Over a rootsy guitar lurch and footloose, freewheeling piano, the Jacksonville band lament the cost of war. "Too many lives they've spent across the ocean / Too much money been spent upon the moon," sings Ronnie Van Zant, calling government expenditure into question. "Things Goin' On" was one of the tracks that announced the phenomenon of Lynyrd Skynyrd to the world, kicking off a prolific career that would take in multiple decades, tours, albums, and deaths. "Things Goin' On" was included on the band's instructional debut album (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd), which was released in 1973 and laid claim to several of their trademark songs: "Gimme Three Steps," "Simple Man," "Tuesday's Gone," and "Free Bird." The LP, which reached number 27 on the US Billboard 200 in 1975, was certified double platinum by the RIAA in 1987.
