Thought to be based on eighteenth-century highwayman Captain Macheath, the cold-blooded criminal of "Mack the Knife" is probably not someone you'd want to meet down a dark alley. Originally composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht for their 1928 music drama The Threepenny Opera (German: Die Dreigroschenoper), which was set in Victorian London,"The Ballad of Mack the Knife," (German: "Die Moritat von Mackie Messer") or "Mack the Knife" was first introduced to American audiences in 1933 in the first English-language production of The Threepenny Opera. It became a popular standard recorded by numerous artists over the years, including Louis Armstrong who brought the song into the American public consciousness via the hit parade in 1955 and generated one of his biggest hits for years to come."Mack the Knife" was also a Number 1 hit in the US and UK for Bobby Darin in 1959 and turned up in an advertising campaign for McDonald’s hamburgers (“Mac tonight”) in the 1980s.
