In spite of their decidedly unGoogleable band name, Live—originally comprising Ed Kowalczyk, Chad Taylor, Chad Alan Gracey, and Patrick Michael Dahlheimer—have been a bastion of American alt-rock since first forming in 1984, releasing their debut album The Death of a Dictionary in 1989 under the initial name of Public Affection before changing their name to Live and dropping Mental Jewelry, their second studio album, in 1991. Funk-tinged post-grunge anthem "Operation Spirit (The Tyranny of Tradition)" is the second track on the album—which was produced by Talking Heads guitarist Jerry Harrison—and its shiniest jewel. Like the rest of the LP, the track holds a mirror to Ed Kowalczyk's interest in Eastern religions, specifically the writings of Indian philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti, introducing a running theme that would continue to shape his lyrics across future albums. "Operation Spirit (The Tyranny of Tradition)" shot to number nine on the Modern Rock chart.
