"Poor Unfortunate Souls" is a song from the 1989 Disney animated film The Little Mermaid. Written by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman, a first draft of the song with Ashman on vocals was sent to actress Pat Carroll in order to convince her to portray the story's main antagonist, Ursula the Sea Witch. Not only did she gladly accept the role, but she also borrowed some of Ashman's inflections during the recording of the track. A Burlesque-inflected number with Broadway vibes, "Poor Unfortunate Souls" comes at a pivotal point in the film's narrative arc, in which Ursula the Sea Witch convinces Princess Ariel to trade in her voice for the opportunity to become human temporarily. Pat Carroll's rendition was included in the 1995 compilation Rascal Songs, which solely featured songs performed by Disney villains. In more recent years, "Poor Unfortunate Souls" was covered by the Jonas Brothers for the two-disk special edition of The Little Mermaid's soundtrack in 2006.
