Inextricably linked with world-famous Broadway and West End musical mainstay Les Misérables, "I Dreamed a Dream" is arguably the best-known show tune from the soundtrack, sung in the first act by Fantine as she laments her recent job loss and looks back at happier days. Originally titled "J'avais rêvé d'une autre vie," ("I dreamed of another life"), the music of "I Dreamed a Dream" was written by Claude-Michel Schönberg, with orchestrations by John Cameron and lyrics from Alain Albert Boublil and Jean-claude Jos Lucchetti Mourou. It was first performed on stage in the 1980 Paris production (premiering globally in 1985) and has been showered with fame over the decades thanks to everyone from original London cast star Patti LuPone to Elaine Paige. In 2009, Scottish Britain's Got Talent contestant Susan Boyle took the song to new heights of popularity when she performed a shiver-inducing rendition of the operatic pop masterpiece to a rapturous response.
