The origins of the protest folk song "Bella Ciao" can be traced back to 19th-century Italy. It originated among the mondina workers, voicing their struggles against the severe conditions in Northern Italy's paddy fields. However, its resonance didn’t stop there. Between 1943 and 1945, during the fervent period of the Italian Civil War and the liberation of Italy, partisans battling against the Nazi and fascist oppressors reshaped this folk tune into an anthem. The song's melody trails back intriguingly to 1919 New York. Researcher Fausto Giovannardi suggests it shares lineage with a Yiddish tune "Koilen," recorded by Mishka Ziganoff, a Ukrainian Klezmer accordionist. This melody likely evolved from "Dus Zekele Koilen," with versions found as early as the 1920s. In the world of music, "Bella Ciao" was immortalized in 1962 by the Italian folksinger Giovanna Daffini. Most notably, in 2017 and 2018, the song pulsated afresh in the global consciousness through the Spanish TV series, La Casa de Papel. Several renditions performed by the different characters, such as El Profesor and Berlín, have entered the charts in Europe, including countries like Austria, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands.
