As one of the first-ever all-female punk bands of all time, L7 is a band with tremendous influence and enduring popularity. After a string of releases on independent labels Epitaph and Sub Pop, the band released their seminal 1992 album Bricks Are Heavy. The album’s first single was Pretend We’re Dead,” an irreverent rock song built around chunky power chords and sneering vocals. The song was a surprise success for the group, bringing them to a new level of worldwide fame and connecting them with the at-the-time burgeoning grunge movement. Pretend We’re Dead was written by the band’s guitarist and singer Donita Sparks and produced by the band along with superstar producer (and future Garbage drummer) Butch Vig. It spent 20 weeks on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks, where it peaked at Number 8. The song has gone on to appear on video games such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Rock Band 2.
