"Shandi" was the first single to be released from Kiss's eighth studio album, Unmasked (1980), which was significant for marking the final appearance of drummer Peter Criss (until their reunion in 1996). Kiss had formed seven years earlier and spent the '70s honing their hard rock sound and hard-living ways. They entered the '80s with a weariness that feels buried into the soft pop-rock sands of "Shandi," which was written by vocalist/guitarist Paul Stanley and producer Vini Poncia, and inspired by The Hollies' take on the Bruce Springsteen song "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)." One of 11 tracks on Unmasked, an uncharacteristically pop-minded album that barely made a dent in the US Top 50, "Shandi," did, however, turn Kiss into Australian superstars. The track did exceptionally well in Australia, where it became a Top 5 hit and made the band's first-ever tour of the country feel like a sensational arrival.
