Kiss’s 1976 album Rock and Roll Over continues the group’s run of chart-topping successes throughout the 1970s, with more finely tuned craftsmanship when it comes to compositions and arrangements. It is also a slight course correction after the eclecticism of their previous album, Destroyer, from the same year. I Want You,” the opening track from the album, establishes this up front: the song opens with a sweetly plucked acoustic guitar and romantic lyrics, but the band is surrendering none of its power: soon, distorted electric guitars and crashing drums (reportedly recorded in a bathroom to achieve the best possible sound) come barreling in. It is a romantic song, but also an angry and defiant one. I Want You was written by Paul Stanley, who also performs lead vocal duties on the song. It was produced by frequent band collaborator Eddie Kramer. Its parent album, Rock and Roll Over peaked at Number 11 on the US Billboard 200 album chart. It was also certified Platinum by the RIAA for sales of over 1,000,000 copies.
