The fear of a sophomore slump is a real concern for any artist who hits it big with their debut album. In 1997, American blues-rock group Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band had the daunting task of following up their hit debut album, 1995’s Ledbetter Heights. They did this with the release of Trouble Is…, their second album, produced by Jerry Harrison. And though the album’s first two singles did respectably well, it was the third single “Blue on Black” which propelled the album into heights of popularity and ensured that the group wouldn’t fall victim to the sophomore slump cliché. “Blue on Black” is a mid-tempo rock song featuring a blistering guitar solo from guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd and vocals from Noah Hunt. Lyrically, “Blue on Black” deals with grief and loss. It was written by Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Mark Selby, and Tia Sillers. The song was a huge success for the group, hitting Number 1 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, as well as Number 78 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
