Perhaps the epitome of the histrionic, glossy sound that dominated the airwaves throughout the 1980s, the bombastic synth-rock banger "Danger Zone" was specially written for the 1986 action blockbuster Top Gun. Unsatisfied with the 300+ songs they had reviewed for the film's opening scene, producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson approached legendary disco pioneer Giorgio Moroder and asked him to compose an original piece of music that would capture the essence of that epic first sequence. With that purpose in mind, the Italian composer teamed up with lyricist Tom Whitlock and recorded a demo that instantly got the approval of the production team. "Danger Zone" was then offered to Jefferson Starship, Toto, and Corey Hart, before finally settling on soft rock singer Kenny Loggins. Featuring electronic drums, hard rock guitars, and saxophone flourishes, the quintessential 1980s track peaked at Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, only surpassed by Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer." In 2018, the original version of "Danger Zone" was used once again on the sequel Top Gun: Maverick.
