Smooth-talking Harlem R&B trailblazer and celebrated whiner Keith Sweat spilled his guts in this suspicious lover jam from hiis 1987 debut Make it Last Forever – a landmark of the new jack swing movement that was built around future-sounding electronic drum machines and the omnipresent touch of producers Teddy Riley and Bernard Belle. The first mid-tempo track on the LP sees the modern R&B luminary belt out his thoughts, feelings, and sleep-deprived agony ("Tossin', turnin', girl / I just can't sleep at night / Ooh, you've been cheating on me / Tell me it's a lie, huh") fuelled by an era-defining buffet of electronic sound effects, from gnarly synth runs and vocoder to booming percussion. "Something Just Ain’t Right went to number 79 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 49 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music\Maxi-Singles Sales chart, and number three on Billboard’s R&B Singles chart in 1988.
