Strong and sensual like its namesake, "Black Coffee" is a smouldering torch song from the Grammy-winning Canadian artist k.d. lang. "I'm feelin' mighty lonesome / Haven't slept a wink,” she sings in a voice that's both laid-back and commanding, before summoning the titular beverage for a bluesy number: “I walk the floor from nine to four / In between I drink / Black coffee." On "Black Coffee," k.d. lang resurrects the spirit of Peggy Lee; the US icon first recorded the song—which was created by Sonny Burke and Paul Francis Webster—for her album of the same name in 1953. "Black Coffee" was one of many highlights on k.d. lang's acclaimed debut solo album Shadowland (1988), a covers collection spanning 1950s and 1960s country ballads. The LP was produced by the legendary Nashville producer Owen Bradley, who worked with the likes of Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Ernest Tubb, Burl Ives and Brenda Lee.
