As the opening song for the 2012 Disney-Pixar animated film Brave, the Celtic-flavored "Touch the Sky" introduces the audience to Merida, the movie's main character. The track can be heard at the very beginning of the film when Merida (voiced by Kelly McDonald) rides her horse through the forest practicing with her bow and arrow, challenging the gender stereotypes of the time. One of the few songs in the soundtrack not written by Patrick Doyle, "Touch the Sky" was composed by Alex Mandel and Mark Andrews, and performed by Scottish folk singer and multi-instrumentalist Julie Fowlis. Featuring traditional instruments such as bagpipes, solo fiddle, and flutes, "Touch the Sky" is the perfect example of the "I Want Song," a popular type of song in musical theatre that outlines the protagonist's desires and ambitions. This type of song has been extensively used by Disney during the company's 'Renaissance' period between 1989 and 1999.
