By 1986, the popularity of American hard rock band Journey had skyrocketed to unimaginable levels, with sold-out shows throughout the globe, multi-platinum albums, and an ever-expanding fanbase. Nevertheless, lead singer Steve Perry was considering quitting the group after releasing his solo debut Street Talk in 1984. After receiving a phone call from keyboardist Jonathan Cain, he agreed to continue performing with Journey and the band entered the studio in late 1985 to record the follow-up to 1983's Frontiers. Produced entirely by Steve Perry, their ninth LP Raised on Radio (originally titled Freedom) didn't perform as expected but still managed to get into the Top 5 of the Billboard 200 chart, producing the singles "Be Good to Yourself," "Girl Can't Help It," and "I'll Be Alright Without You." The album also included the title track, an anthemic arena rock banger that paid tribute to all the rock and roll artists Steve Perry used to listen to on the radio as a child. Even though it was only sent to radio, the song peaked at Number 27 on the US Mainstream Rock chart.
