"You're the Nearest Thing to Heaven" is a classic country song by legendary American singer-songwriter Johnny Cash, co-written by the Man in Black himself alongside Hoyt Johnson and Jimmy Atkins. Released in August 1958 by Sun Records, the song was part of a single, with "The Ways of a Woman in Love" as its A-side. Musically speaking, the song doesn't stray too far from Johnny Cash's signature blend of country, folk, and rockabilly. In its lyrics, the singer describes the wonders he's seen in God's creation, only to conclude that his sweetheart is the "nearest thing to heaven on this Earth." The song was one of the rare instances where he co-wrote a piece while at Sun Records; it was just one of four co-written tracks during his tenure with the label. While he had adapted and arranged songs previously, co-writing was still relatively rare for him at this stage, making this track noteworthy. "You're the Nearest Thing to Heaven" peaked at number 5 on the Billboard US Hot Country Songs chart.
