Digging its heels into the galloping spirit of the western, Johnny Cash's outlaw countryfied folk yarn "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky" came hurtling into view in 1979, recorded for the star's 62nd album Silver. The country and western song, which peaked at Number 2 in the US, was a cover of 1948's "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend" by US songwriter, film and television actor Stan Jones – who was inspired by a Native American story he had been told as a child – and tells the supernatural-inspired tale of "an old cowboy" who "went ridin' out one dark and windy day" and has a vision of "a mighty herd of red-eyed cows". The steel-hooved cattle are being chased by the spirits or ghost of damned riders: "Their horns were black and shiny and their hot breath he could feel / A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky / For he saw the riders coming hard and he heard their mournful cry." Scary? Yee-haw.

There was 1 star rating for this but I give it 5 stars because there is plenty of latitude in this arrangement to vary the timing, phrasing etc. The arrangement is great for a baritone like me in +1 (F minor).
