Johnny Cash's gravelly reflections are met with an eerie clinking of chains on this ghostly cut from his final 2010 album American VI: Aint No Grave. "There ain't no grave / Can hold my body down / There ain't no grave / Can hold my body down," he repeats in the chorus, stitching together a melancholic cover of a spiritual song originally written and recorded by "Brother" Claude Ely (1922 – 1978), who was a religious singer-songwriter and Pentecostal Holiness preacher. Around the time of making the song, Johnny Cash had just buried his beloved wife, June Carter Cash, who died on May 15th, 2003 from complications due to heart surgery, and he was also suffering from multiple health problems himself. He recorded the album with Rick Rubin between May and August 2003. Johnny Cash sadly died of complications from diabetes on September 12th, 2003, less than four months after his wife passed away. The posthumous album American VI: Aint No Grave was released seven years later and went straight to number 3 on the US Billboard 200 chart.
