Through a relentless work ethic and a rootsy rock'n'roll sound that appealed to both blue-collar workers and college students, the Narragansett-based heartland rock combo John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band went from local bar band to regional sensation, enjoying a great deal of popularity in the Northeastern corridor of the United States. Led by John Cafferty, who slowly but surely turned his teenage dreams of becoming a performer into a full-time job, the band made an initial impact on the American airwaves in 1980 with their self-released first single "Wild Summer Nights." A party anthem about the fun-loving lifestyle of the Atlantic seaboard, "Wild Summer Nights" was released in tandem with the single "Tender Years" and sold over 10,000 copies. Thanks to the single's success, the band was invited by producer Kenny Vance to score the soundtrack of the 1983 musical drama film, Eddie and the Cruisers.
