Prolific country singer and songwriter John Anderson kickstarted his career in the late 1970s, bagging his first record deal with Warner Bros. Records and subsequently scoring his first hit on the Billboard Country chart with 1977's "I’ve Got a Feelin’ (Somebody's Been Stealin')." By 1980, the time of "1959"'s release, he was a fully-fledged country star with a bright future stretched out in front of him. However, in 1959, things weren't quite so rosy. In this candid tale, John Anderson looks back on a particularly tough year when his love married someone else after he was drafted into the military after graduation. "1959" was written by Gary Gentry and released as the fifth single from John Anderson's self-titled album of 1980. The track struck number seven on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and was later covered by John Prine on the 2022 John Anderson tribute album Something Borrowed, Something New.
