Eventually melding soul with jazz to become a pioneering fusion artist, legendary American pianist and composer Joe Sample started his career in the late '50s jazz scene as a founding member of the Jazz Crusaders along with trombonist Wayne Henderson, tenor saxman Wilton Felder, and drummer Stix Hooper, and putting out his first release with the group, Freedom Sound, in 1961. By the late '70s, Joe Sample had accumulated a packed diary of guest appointments and collaborations while collecting a series of solo releases as leader, including 1978's Rainbow Seeker. He spent the next few decades pursuing his proclivity for jazz while evolving his sound. Housed on The Song Lives On, his 1999 collaborative album with R&B singer Lalah Hathaway, "For All We Know" is the sound of an artist easing into the new millennium; an understated, feathery jazz marvel, lightly pulled along by sparse, yet crescendoing piano, satisfying plucks of double bass, and the swell of strings that uplift Lalah Hathaway's smokey alto.
