The infectious soul-pop classic "Mockingbird" was originally recorded and popularized by the American rhythm and blues duo Inez and Charlie Foxx in 1963. It was based on the traditional folk song "Hush Little Baby," a very popular lullaby in North America. Its lyrics are written from the point of view of a couple of parents who try to appease their child by promising them expensive gifts. In the years that followed, the track was covered by Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, and Carly Simon, who released it as the first single from her 1974 fourth studio album, Hot Cakes. Recorded as a duet with her then-husband James Taylor, Carly Simon's version of "Mockingbird" peaked at Number 5 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart and Number 10 on the Adult Contemporary chart, eventually receiving Gold certification by the RIAA. The song features minor adjustments to the original lyrics, as well as keyboard arrangements by Dr. John and a saxophone solo by Michael Brecker.
