Jackson Browne sent out a heartfelt appreciation to his roadies on "The Load-Out," thanking the "champs" who are "the first to come and the last to leave". In a live setting, the US folk-rock hero and activist often blended the track with "Stay," his cover of Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs' 1960 doo-wop gem. This vibrant mashup—recorded at Jackson Browne's August 1977 Merriweather Post Pavilion show—was captured on his acclaimed fifth album, Running on Empty. The LP, a thematic exploration of life on the road, was daubed with two Grammy nods in 1979, Album of the Year and Pop Male Vocal Performance for the album's title track, and is still Jackson Browne's biggest commercial hitter to date. Released in 1977, Running on Empty, which comprised tracks recorded live or while touring, rocketed to number three on the Billboard Pop Albums chart in 1978 and hung around there for an impressive 65 weeks.
