"Fotonovela" is a song by Spanish pop singer Juan Carlos Ramos Vaquero, better known by his stage name Iván. It was released as a single from Iván's fourth studio album, 1985's Baila. Penned by Luis Gómez-Escolar and produced by Pedro Vidal, "Fotonovela" bears all the elements that characterized the reigning synth-pop aesthetic of the 1980s, including electronic percussion, a plethora of synthesizer sounds, and a danceable drum beat. This combo is accompanied by lavish string arrangements and several melodies coming in and out, resulting in an uber-infectious earworm. In Spanish, a "fotonovela" is a storytelling format similar to comic books, and the song's lyrics express just that—the protagonist is in a relationship with someone who's flashy and extroverted, but their bond is a shallow one. It didn't take long before "Fotonovela" became Iván's biggest hit, reaching the top of the Spanish charts and selling over 6 million copies in Europe. Its popularity also extended to Latin America, where it was used as the opening song for the Peruvian soap opera Carmín.
