Paying homage to 1968 World War II-set movie Where Eagles Dare, directed byBrian G. Hutton and starring Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood, and Mary Ure, "Where Eagles Dare" plots a similar narrative that follows a group of Allied soldiers and a rescue mission in the German Alps. Iron Maiden founder, bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris references a standout scene from the movie with the line, "Bavarian alps that lay all around they seem to stare from below / The enemy lines a long time passed are lying deep in the snow," and he also penned the music too. "Where Eagles Dare" was featured on Iron Maiden's fourth album, Piece of Mind (1983), which went to number three on the UK Albums Chart and scored a platinum certification in both the UK and North America. It was also the band's first LP to feature drummer Nicko McBrain following the departure of Clive Burr the previous year.
