Iam Tongi made history as the first Hawaiian-born person to win the iconic US reality competition American Idol. Aged just 18, he dazzled the judges at the audition stage with a tear-inducing performance of James Blunt‘s “Monsters," an emotionally charged dedication to his late father Rodney, who passed away several months prior to his audition. He ultimately won American Idol in May 2023 with his rendition of Spawnbreezie's 2011 reggae track "Don't Let Go." The much-loved teen sensation, who is of Tongan, Samoan and Irish descent, also became the first non-country singer to pick up the prize. He performed this lilting, Hawaiian-inspired version of the Lionel Richie 1983 classic "Stuck on You" during the show. Lionel Richie can be seen singing and dancing along in Iam Tongi's live televised performance of the much-loved song, which originally peaked at number three in the US and went to number 12 in the UK.
