In 1993, a Trinidadian-German singer named Nestor Alexander Haddaway put his voice to a Europop tune that became an enduring classic. The 1990s clubbers' favourite is built around a hypnotic call to the dancefloor that's refreshingly mismatched; desolate lyrics about unrequited love gave birth to one of the most unforgettable refrains of the era: “What is love? Baby don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me no more”. Written and produced by Coconut Records' Dee Dee Halligan (born Tony Hendrik) and Junior Torello (born Karin Hartmann-Eisenblätter), What Is Love was featured on Haddaway’s debut The Album and released as a single in 1993, claiming megahit status across Europe where it lit up the dancefloors like a firework. It zoomed to the top of the singles chart in 13 countries, rising to number two on the UK singles chart, and also making a dent on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart where it peaked at number 11.
