First introduced to the world in 1974, Scarlet Begonias traversed the decades and took on a life of its own to become one of the Grateful Dead's best-known tracks. This jaunty, Caribbean-flavoured song about a romantic encounter was originally "many pages long" and named "Bristol Girls", before morphing into its present form and appearing on the band's 1974 album From the Mars Hotel. Robert Hunter penned the song's lyrics – which share similarities with the British nursery rhyme “Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury Cross” – and the music came by way of the inimitable Jerry Garcia. Over the years the song became a firm fan favorite, first making its live debut on March 23, 1974 at the Cow Palace in Daly City, California. From the Mars Hotel found the Grateful Dead in a rootsy, boogie wonderland, abandoning the experimental arty jazz adventures of their previous album Wake of the Flood, which they had dopped less than a year before.
