Despite being considered a commercial flop upon its release, the LP featured the plaintive folk ballad "If You Could Read My Mind," a reflection on his recent divorce from his first wife Brita Ingegerd Olaisson. Thanks to the success of the single, which became his first international hit after reaching the top of Billboard's Easy Listening chart, the album was reissued under the name If You Could Read My Mind and peaked at Number 12 on the Billboard 200. In 1987, the song was the subject of a legal dispute between Gordon Lightfoot and Michael Masser, the composer behind Whitney Houston's "The Greatest Love of All."
