Hit-maker Gene Pitney grew up in Connecticut listening to doo-wop groups and began making moves towards a professional music career in the late 1950s, first as part of the duo Jamie and Jane with Ginny Arnell, and later putting himself on the songwriting map with The Crystals' 1962 hit "He's a Rebel." "If I Didn't Have a Dime" came out the same year as the chart-topping "He's a Rebel," but instead of motorbikes and bad boys, finds room for cooning, romantic declarations ("Now with every sweet caress / Oh, my darling how I bless / That little jukebox / Oh, ohh love songs that they sing") and a sonic dash of country. Produced by Aaron Schroeder and Wally Gold, "If I Didn't Have a Dime"—or to quote its full name, "If I Didn't Have A Dime (To Play The Jukebox)" was released as the B-side to the single "Only Love Can Break A Heart," and was a top ten hit in Australia as well as charting in Canada and the US.
