"Pushin' horns weren't easy like the movie said it was," begins Garth Brooks in this portrait of cowboy life that's a far cry from the grit and glamour of the westerns. The Cowboy Song" mostly rests upon a rootsy acoustic melody and fiddle solo to chart the well-trodden path of a cowboy who's "just chasin' what he really loves and what's burnin' in his soul". Garth Brooks revealed in an interview that "The Cowboy Song" (which was written in 1987 by Roy Robinson) had been found in the trash by someone on his team who played it to him, and the rest is history. The track was featured on Garth Brooks's fifth studio album In Pieces, which was released in 1993 by Liberty Records and zoomed to the top of the Billboard 200 and the Top Country Albums chart. In August 2020, the LP—which yielded two number country singles in "Ain't Going Down ('Til the Sun Comes Up)" and "American Honky-Tonk Bar Association"—was certified diamond by the RIAA.
