"Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" is an ode to hope told through the eyes of a man returning home after three years in prison. In the song, he is searching for a sign (a yellow ribbon - a symbol of devotion that supposedly dates back to the 19th century) that his love will be waiting for him. The track was written in the early 20th century by songwriters Irwin Levine and L. Russell Brown following an anecdote they'd come across during their time in the army. Later recorded by Tony Orlando and Dawn, "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" ascended to the heights of pop stardom in 1973, with Frank Sinatra recording his interpretation the following year for his album Some Nice Things I've Missed, a quasi-concept record centred around tracks he had missed out on while in retirement from 1971 to 1973. "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond and "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" by Stevie Wonder were among the LP gems.
