The best gospel songs can uplift your spirit and spread joy. Created in 1967 by clergyman Philip Doddridge, "Oh Happy Day" broke down barriers to become one of the biggest crossover hits the world of gospel has ever known, captivating a huge audience through its inclusion in the 1993 movie favourite Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. Philip Doddridge drew inspiration for the song from a 1755 hymn and arguably laid the blueprint for modern gospel with "Oh Happy Day," which became a global sensation in 1969 thanks to The Edwin Hawkins Singers (who won a Grammy for their effort in 1970). The late legendary Etta James, who grew up singing gospel in the church, reimagined "Oh Happy Day" with a full gospel choir in 1982 and moved the Earth with her powerful voice. "Oh Happy Day" was later included on the 2002 album Blowin' in the Wind: The Gospel Soul of Etta James, a stunning tribute to the star's gospel connection.
