As the opening number of the 2021 Disney animated film Encanto, "The Family Madrigal" introduces the audience to the multigenerational Colombian family and their magical powers. It was written by American musician Lin-Manuel Miranda and performed by actress Stephanie Beatriz, the voice of main protagonist Mirabel Madrigal. Olga Merediz, the actress portraying Alma "Abuela" Madrigal, also makes a brief appearance during the refrain. According to Miranda, "The Family Madrigal" was inspired by "Belle," the opening song in 1991's Beauty and the Beast. The song is written in the vein of vallenato, a type of folkloric music indigenous to Colombia, and features several traditional instruments such as accordion, caja vallenata, and guacharaca. After its commercial release, "The Family Madrigal" reached Number 7 on the UK Singles Chart and Number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was certified Gold by the RIAA.
