Elvis Presley's hour-long broadcast, originally called Singer Presents ...Elvis and now known as the '68 Comeback Special,” aired on NBC on December 3 1968 as an attempt to revive his musical career performance after a seven-year period spent focussing on movie appearances. The gamble paid off: the special was a hit with viewers across the board. "Are You Lonesome Tonight (Comeback Special '68 - live)" is one of the many highlights performed during the swaggering hour-long display of showmanship. Originally written by Roy Turk and Lou Handman in 1926, Elvis Presley first made the track his own in April 1960, following two years of service in the United States Army. He was encouraged to record the song by his now-infamous manager Colonel Tom Parker; it was his wife's (Marie Mott) favourite. Elvis Presley's original recording of "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" was certified 2x platinum by the RIAA in 1992.
